Launching event of the INTERREG-Project "RPIS 4.0"

On 23 January 2020, the launching event of the new INTERREG V A project “RPIS 4.0 – Smart Port Community System for Upper Rhine Ports” took place at the Hotel Speicher 7 in Mannheim.

The successful cross-border cooperation of the nine Upper Rhine ports (Ports of Switzerland, Weil am Rhein, Mulhouse, Colmar/Neuf Brisach, Strasbourg, Kehl, Karlsruhe, Ludwigshafen and Mannheim) is being intensified. The inland ports are supported by the EU funding programme INTERREG Upper Rhine.

During the launching event on Thursday, 23.01.2020, in Mannheim, the port representatives presented their implementation activities to major stakeholders of the inland waterway transport. The focus is on extending the web-based traffic management platform RPIS (Rhine Ports Information System). So far, the IT platform had focused on increasing the efficiency of waterborne container traffic management on the Upper Rhine. Within the new project, other  transport segments, such as e.g. Bulk transport (dry and liquid goods) and river cruises will be integrated in the RPIS system.

The players in the Upper Rhine ports see a key to success in the digitisation of inland waterway transport. This also applies, among other things, to the development and establishment of an IT-supported port management system. The nine Upper Rhine Ports meet these challenges in their new project initiative entitled “RPIS 4.0 Smart Community System for Upper Rhine Ports”, thereby contributing to the sustainable strengthening of inland waterway transport and inland ports on the Upper Rhine and beyond.

The project has a duration of 36 months and is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the INTERREG-V Upper rhine programme and has a volume of EUR 1 379 000. The funding amounts to 50 %.
